Japan's MMX Mission Launches to Retrieve Samples from Mars' Moon Phobos

Japan's space agency JAXA has launched a landmark mission targeting the Martian moon Phobos. The Martian Moon eXploration (MMX) spacecraft is designed to land on Phobos, collect soil samples, and return them to Earth — a feat that would mark the first successful retrieval of material from the Mars moon system.

Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons, remains relatively mysterious despite its proximity to the Red Planet. Scientists believe studying its composition could provide insights into the early history of the solar system and even Mars itself. The mission also carries significance for future exploration ambitions, as understanding these moons could inform potential staging points for crewed missions to Mars.

The spacecraft is expected to spend several years completing its journey and sample collection operations before returning to Earth with its cargo.
