Judge Pauses Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Over Antitrust Concerns
A federal judge has partially granted a request from 12 state attorneys general to temporarily pause the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín issued a temporary restraining order against the $110 billion deal after the states demonstrated "irreparable harm" could occur without the pause. The judge stated that based on the new company's projected market share, "the Court is persuaded that it can presume the proposed merger is likely to violate antitrust laws."
The coalition of states—California, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Washington—filed suit against the merger approximately one week prior to the ruling.
The temporary restraining order puts the deal on hold while the antitrust case proceeds, giving regulators and courts additional time to evaluate the competitive implications of combining two major media giants.
