Environmental DNA Detects Critically Endangered Chinese Bahaba in Hong Kong Waters After Decade-Long Absence

Researchers at Lingnan University have confirmed the presence of the critically endangered Chinese bahaba (Bahaba taipingensis) in western Hong Kong SAR waters using a co-developed environmental DNA (eDNA) technique. This marks the first scientific documentation of the species in the region in over a decade.

The Chinese bahaba, also known as the giant yellow croaker, is classified as critically endangered by conservation authorities. The fish can grow up to two meters in length, making it one of the larger estuarine fish species. Its populations have declined dramatically due to overfishing and habitat loss.

The research team employed environmental DNA methodology, which detects genetic material shed by organisms into their environment—such as through skin cells, scales, or waste—allowing scientists to confirm species presence without direct observation or capture. This non-invasive approach is particularly valuable for monitoring rare or elusive species.

The successful detection in Hong Kong waters suggests that conservation efforts may be having a positive effect, though researchers caution that continued monitoring will be necessary to determine whether a viable population exists in the area.
