Scientists Identify First New Living Cat Species in a Century Through Genetic Analysis
Researchers have identified a new species of tiger cat in Bolivia, representing the first new living cat species formally described in approximately a century. The discovery came through genetic testing of two small wild cats that revealed sufficient DNA differences from known feline species to warrant classification as a distinct branch on the feline family tree.
The findings highlight how advances in genetic analysis continue to reshape our understanding of biodiversity, even among well-studied animal groups like cats.
