Meta Imposes Rate Limits on Smart Glasses AI Features, Launches $19.99 Monthly Subscription

Meta is implementing usage caps on AI features built into its smart glasses, marking a significant shift in how the company monetizes its hardware.

Starting soon, the Conversation Focus feature—which enables real-time AI interactions through the glasses—will be limited to 3 hours per month at no extra cost. Users wanting more than that will need to subscribe to Meta One Premium, priced at $19.99 per month, which raises the limit to 15 hours per month.

Meta is careful to frame these restrictions as "rate limits" rather than outright paywalls. A help article from the company states that a subscription will not be required to use the glasses themselves. However, advanced AI functionality is now gated behind what amounts to a soft paywall.

This move signals Meta's attempt to generate recurring revenue from its hardware ecosystem beyond the initial purchase price of the glasses. The company appears to be betting that users invested in AI-powered smart glasses will find the monthly subscription worthwhile for extended daily use.
