Meta Rolls Out AI Image Feature That Uses Public Instagram Photos by Default
Meta is now integrating AI image generation directly into its platforms with the rollout of its Muse Image model. Under this system, photos posted to public Instagram accounts are automatically eligible to be used as training data and reference material for the AI system—unless users take the step to opt out.
The opt-out mechanism requires users to manually change their account settings to restrict how their public content can be used for AI training and generation. This means that by default, the system assumes consent from users who haven't adjusted their privacy preferences.
The move is part of a broader industry trend where social media platforms are leveraging user-generated content to train and power generative AI features. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about such default-on approaches, arguing that users should have to opt in rather than opt out of having their content used in this manner.
Meta's implementation puts the burden on users to discover and act on privacy settings rather than requiring affirmative consent for AI use of their photos.
