Meta Pulls Instagram AI Feature After Backlash Over Potential Deepfake Misuse

Meta has reversed course on a new Instagram feature that allowed users to generate AI images of public accounts. The feature, part of Meta's new Muse Image AI model announced earlier this week, let users @-mention any public Instagram account to use its content as a basis for AI-generated images.

According to Meta, the intent was to create "a useful creative tool" that would allow people to reference public accounts in their AI-generated content. However, the implementation drew immediate criticism over concerns that it could easily be abused to create deepfakes and non-consensual imagery of real people.

In an update to the original blog post about Muse Image AI, Meta acknowledged the concerns and confirmed the feature has been disabled. The company stated that their goal was to provide creative capabilities while respecting account holders' privacy and consent.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between AI image generation tools and concerns about their potential misuse. Public figures and everyday users alike have increasingly worried about the ease with which AI can be used to create realistic-looking content depicting people who never consented to appear in such material.

Meta has not yet indicated whether or when a revised version of the feature might be reintroduced with additional safeguards.
