Microsoft Unveils MAI-Thinking-1: A New Flagship Reasoning AI Model

Microsoft has unveiled MAI-Thinking-1, its first advanced reasoning AI model and new flagship, at the Build 2026 conference. The company describes it as a "medium-sized model" that reportedly matches leading models on key software engineering benchmarks. Microsoft emphasized that MAI-Thinking-1 was trained from the ground up on clean data without distillation from third-party models.

The announcement represents an ambitious expansion into AI model development for Microsoft. Until recently, the company relied primarily on OpenAI's models for its AI services. The two companies renegotiated their partnership last year, loosening their previous arrangement. This new in-house model signals Microsoft's intent to build more autonomous AI capabilities.

Alongside MAI-Thinking-1, Microsoft announced several other new AI models at the event, suggesting a broader strategy to establish itself as a direct competitor in the AI development space.
