MIT Develops Dual-Mode Spacecraft Thruster for Small Satellites

MIT researchers have demonstrated a spacecraft propulsion system that could fundamentally change what's possible for small satellites. The new design uses a single fuel source to power both chemical and electric thrusters, combining quick bursts of speed for rapid maneuvers with highly efficient long-range propulsion for deep space missions.

Traditional spacecraft typically require separate systems for different propulsion needs, adding complexity and weight. This hybrid approach offers a compact alternative that could enable CubeSats and other small satellites to perform missions previously limited to larger spacecraft.

A NASA-supported CubeSat mission is planned to test the technology in orbit, marking an important step toward validating the system for actual spaceflight applications.
