MMX Mission Launches Toward Mars Moon Phobos

The Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission has lifted off, beginning its voyage to Phobos, the larger of Mars's two moons. Developed primarily by JAXA with contributions from ESA and other international partners, the mission aims to land on Phobos's surface to collect samples and study the moon's geology in detail.

Phobos orbits extremely close to Mars, completing an orbit in just under eight hours. Scientists are particularly interested in whether the moon is a captured asteroid or a fragment of Mars itself, blasted into orbit by an ancient impact. The sample return component of the mission could provide crucial data to answer this question.

In addition to its scientific objectives, MMX will also observe Mars from orbit, contributing to our understanding of the Red Planet's atmosphere and surface features. The mission represents an important step in exploring the Mars system and could inform future human missions to the Martian sphere.
