European supermarkets report freezer temperatures altered in cyberattacks

A new wave of suspected cyberattacks has affected supermarkets across several European countries, with retailers reporting unauthorized changes to the temperatures of refrigerators and freezers.

Major grocery chains in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Estonia were affected, according to local reports. At an ICA Kvantum supermarket in Sjöbo, Sweden, employees found that freezer temperatures had been remotely raised to 50°C (122°F) overnight, leading to spoiled food being removed.

The Swedish chain Coop also confirmed that unauthorized actors had accessed its systems, although the provided report does not specify the extent of the disruption across its stores. The incidents show that attacks on operational technology can directly affect refrigeration systems, food safety, and store operations.
