Juno Reveals a Complex Plasma Shield Around Jupiter

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has revealed that Jupiter’s magnetic environment protects the planet from the solar wind through a more complex system than previously understood.

Rather than relying on a single region, Jupiter’s shield appears to involve powerful plasma waves and multiple shock regions. These features create a substantially different defense system from Earth’s, highlighting the varied ways planets interact with the charged particles emitted by the Sun.

The results may provide useful insight into the much larger shock waves generated by exploding stars, where similar plasma processes operate on an entirely different scale.
