NASA's 2028 Mars Mission to Feature Nuclear Reactor and Three Helicopters
NASA has announced plans for a 2028 Mars mission that represents a significant expansion of the agency's robotic exploration capabilities on the Red Planet. The mission will send a spacecraft carrying a nuclear reactor toward Mars, providing a reliable power source for extended surface operations.
In addition to the nuclear-powered spacecraft, the mission will deploy three small helicopters to explore the Martian terrain from the air. This multi-vehicle approach builds on the success of NASA's Ingenuity helicopter, which demonstrated the feasibility of powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere during the Perseverance rover mission.
The use of nuclear power addresses one of the key challenges of Mars exploration: maintaining sufficient energy generation during the planet's dust storms and through the long Martian nights. Unlike solar power, a nuclear reactor can provide consistent electricity regardless of weather conditions or daylight hours, enabling more ambitious and sustained scientific operations.
