NASA’s Lucy Reaches Jupiter’s Trojan Asteroid Region
NASA’s Lucy has completed more than 2.2 billion miles of travel over five years, reaching a region of space populated by Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids. The mission is now the first to visit this unusual orbital group, which shares Jupiter’s orbit around the Sun.
This milestone opens Lucy’s encounter phase, during which the spacecraft will observe the Trojan asteroids up close. The mission’s observations are intended to provide insight into the composition and formation of these ancient bodies.
