NASA Launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to Explore the Hidden Universe
NASA has successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the agency's newest space-based observatory tasked with exploring some of the universe's greatest mysteries. The telescope, named in honor of Nancy Grace Roman—NASA's first Chief of Astronomy who championed the development of major space telescopes—will spend its mission peering into the hidden cosmos.
The Roman Space Telescope features a wide field of view that allows it to survey large swaths of the sky more efficiently than previous observatories. This survey capability makes it particularly well-suited for its primary science objectives, which include studying the nature of dark energy, mapping the distribution of dark matter, and conducting a census of exoplanets throughout the galaxy.
According to mission scientists, the telescope is designed to spot "the weird, the rare and the unusual" phenomena scattered across the universe. Its infrared observations will enable astronomers to peer through cosmic dust clouds and study distant galaxies, star formation regions, and other objects that remain hidden from optical telescopes.
