NASA's PUNCH Mission Advances Solar Storm Prediction Capabilities

NASA's PUNCH (Polarimeter to UNify the Corona and Heliosphere) mission has demonstrated improved capabilities for predicting when solar storms will arrive at Earth. The mission, designed to study the Sun's outer atmosphere and heliosphere, provides data that helps scientists track the formation and trajectory of coronal mass ejections—large eruptions of solar plasma and magnetic fields that can affect satellites, power grids, and radio communications.

By combining wide-field imaging with polarized light measurements, PUNCH offers a more comprehensive view of the space weather events that originate from the Sun. This enhanced observational approach allows researchers to make more accurate forecasts of solar storm arrival times, giving infrastructure operators more lead time to prepare for potential impacts.
