Electrically powered implant lowers blood sugar in diabetic mice

A new electronic implant could offer an alternative approach to managing type 2 diabetes without insulin or traditional medication. The device uses electricity to activate a catalyst that converts excess glucose into a substance the body can excrete through urine.

By preventing excess glucose from being stored as fat, the implant may address both elevated blood sugar and weight gain. In experiments with diabetic mice, researchers reported that the device precisely controlled blood glucose and promoted weight loss.

The results are preclinical, and further testing would be needed to determine whether the approach can work safely and effectively in humans.
