Oral Weight Loss Drug Orforglipron Shows Promise in Head-to-Head Trial Against Semaglutide
A new oral weight loss medication is showing promising results in direct comparison with existing treatments. The once-daily pill, orforglipron, outperformed oral semaglutide—the non-injectable form of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy—in a major clinical trial.
The trial results showed that orforglipron delivered better outcomes for both weight loss and blood sugar regulation. Unlike injectable GLP-1 medications, this tablet doesn't require refrigeration, making storage and distribution simpler. Patients also don't need to time their doses around meals, which could improve adherence.
Perhaps most significantly for global health equity, orforglipron is cheaper to manufacture than current options. This cost advantage could help expand access to effective weight loss treatments in lower-resource settings where cold-chain storage and higher drug costs have been barriers to adoption.
