Major AI Labs Stay on Sidelines as Nvidia Leads New Security Coalition and Open-Weights Push
A notable divide is emerging in the AI industry as the sector's largest players pursue divergent paths on security and openness.
Nvidia has launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, a security-focused coalition that has attracted over 30 participating companies. The alliance was formed in the wake of a breach involving an OpenAI agent, highlighting growing concerns about security vulnerabilities in AI systems. However, three of the most prominent AI developers—OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic—are notably absent from the coalition's membership.
Separately, Nvidia and 24 other companies signed an open-weights letter addressed to Washington policymakers who are currently considering restrictions on Chinese AI models. This letter advocates for policies that would support open-weights model development and deployment. Here too, OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic did not sign, suggesting these companies may prefer different regulatory or strategic approaches.
The absence of these major labs from both initiatives raises questions about the evolving competitive and political dynamics within the AI sector. Nvidia, with its dominant position in AI training hardware, is positioning itself as a convening force for broader industry collaboration on security standards and model access policy—but without buy-in from the companies that currently lead commercial AI development.
The timing of the security alliance comes as AI systems become increasingly integrated into sensitive infrastructure, making security concerns more pressing for the industry as a whole.
