Nvidia Puts $1.5 Billion Behind SoftBank's AI Data Center Ambitions

Nvidia is deepening its ties with SoftBank's artificial intelligence infrastructure push through a $1.5 billion investment commitment.

The chipmaker will take a stake in a data center development venture backed by SoftBank, a company closely connected to the Stargate project—a joint initiative with OpenAI that aims to build out substantial AI computing infrastructure in the United States. By anchoring its investment in this particular venture, Nvidia ensures its graphics processors remain central to the expanding AI compute ecosystem that OpenAI depends on.

The deal reflects the increasingly strategic nature of data center investments in the AI era. Rather than simply selling chips, Nvidia is securing long-term partnerships that guarantee sustained demand for its hardware. For SoftBank, the injection of capital accelerates its ability to compete in the crowded data center buildout space, where hyperscalers and sovereign wealth funds are all racing to secure power and land for AI facilities.

The arrangement also underscores how the AI industry is structuring itself around a handful of critical dependencies—chip supply, power availability, and land—creating tightly interwoven relationships between model developers, infrastructure builders, and semiconductor suppliers.
