Google Disconnects Android Partner After 1.3 Million Set-Top Boxes Were Used in Botnet
Google has cut ties with Shenzhen-based Videostrong Technology Co. after the Android device manufacturer allegedly built and operated a hidden backdoor in 1.3 million set-top boxes. The compromised devices were turned into a botnet without their owners' knowledge.
According to Google, the devices were used for malicious activity, including ad fraud, data exfiltration, and routing unauthorized network traffic. The backdoor was intentionally developed, deployed, and operated for financial gain, the company said.
Google said it has dismantled the backdoor and banned Videostrong from building or selling certified Android devices or supplying software for them. The incident highlights the role of device manufacturers and software supply chains in securing connected hardware after products reach consumers.
