OpenAI Partners With Former Apple Design Chief Jony Ive on New AI Hardware Device
OpenAI is reportedly working with Jony Ive, the renowned former Apple design chief, to create a new category of AI-powered smart speaker. The partnership represents OpenAI's first significant push into dedicated consumer hardware, aiming to move beyond simply adding AI features to existing devices.
Ive, who left Apple in 2019 after nearly three decades where he oversaw the design of the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air, brings extensive experience in creating iconic consumer electronics. His involvement suggests the new device will prioritize both sophisticated AI capabilities and distinctive industrial design.
The project is being developed through Ive's design company LoveFrom, which he founded after leaving Apple. Reports indicate the goal is to create an "AI-native" device—meaning one designed specifically around artificial intelligence interactions rather than retrofitting traditional hardware with AI capabilities.
This move positions OpenAI alongside other major technology companies that have ventured into hardware, including Apple's Siri-powered HomePod, Amazon's Alexa-enabled Echo devices, and Google's Nest smart speakers. Financial backing for the project reportedly includes significant investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, with an estimated valuation of at least $1 billion for the joint venture.
