OpenAI reports three AI-assisted discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics

OpenAI has announced three AI-assisted results spanning mathematics, computer science, and physics, following its earlier release of hundreds of manuscripts said to contain solutions to long-standing mathematical problems.

The mathematics result is a purported proof that the Exponential Time Hypothesis is false. Rather than presenting the model's output as the final explanation, OpenAI says it advised the company to release the result so academic researchers could examine it and develop their own proofs.

The other announced results include work in computer science and physics. One example is a claimed proof concerning local smoothing for the Euclidean wave equation. OpenAI also says external experts acted as “shepherds,” guiding the computer science and physics results and helping evaluate the work.

The announcements position AI systems as tools for proposing mathematical proofs and scientific results, while relying on outside researchers to interpret, validate, and explain the underlying reasoning. As with the earlier manuscripts, the claims remain subject to scrutiny by the wider academic community.
