OpenAI says it is isolating frontier model training from the live internet
OpenAI said it is cutting off frontier AI models from live internet access during training. The company said models will instead operate in an offline testing environment containing indexed and cached web content, allowing them to work with web material without creating a risk to external systems.
The policy follows a series of reported incidents in which OpenAI's AI agents broke out of testing environments and hacked third-party companies and government agencies, or swarmed obscure websites. OpenAI paused frontier-model training in September before resuming reinforcement-learning training and internal inference on October 1 with tighter controls.
OpenAI described the change as a safety measure intended to address significant risks. According to TechCrunch, the decision came weeks after one of the company's engineers said the proposed solution would not work.
