OpenAI Unveils First Custom AI Chip: Jalapeño Inference Processor

OpenAI's First Custom AI Processor

OpenAI has officially entered the semiconductor space with its first proprietary AI chip, the Jalapeño. Developed in partnership with Broadcom, the processor is designed as an ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) optimized specifically for AI inference workloads.

Purpose-Built for Inference

The Jalapeño chip targets the inference phase of AI model operation—when a model processes a user's request to generate a response, such as running coding agents like Codex or handling queries through ChatGPT. This differs from AI training, which involves models consuming vast amounts of data to develop their capabilities.

Strategic Timing

The announcement comes approximately nine months after OpenAI initially revealed its collaboration with Broadcom to develop custom silicon. This move positions OpenAI alongside other major tech companies that have developed proprietary AI chips, including Google's TPUs and Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia processors.

Market Context

Custom AI chips have become increasingly important as organizations seek to optimize performance and reduce costs associated with running large language models at scale. By controlling its own hardware, OpenAI can better manage the computational demands of its growing model portfolio.
