OpenAI Releases GPT-5.6 to the Public and Launches ChatGPT Work Agent
OpenAI has received the greenlight from the Trump administration to make GPT-5.6 available to the general public, ending a brief period in which the model was accessible only to government-approved organizations.
The rollout comes roughly two weeks after GPT-5.6 became entangled in regulatory discussions during its limited preview phase. CEO Sam Altman took to social media to celebrate the public release, describing the model as "the best model we have ever produced."
Alongside the public launch, OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new AI agent designed to bridge the gap between ChatGPT's conversational interface and Codex's specialized capabilities. The new tool is powered by the GPT-5.6 model suite, which includes the Sol, Terra, and Luna variants.
Unlike Codex, which was primarily built for software development tasks, ChatGPT Work aims to extend similar capabilities to everyday workplace tasks that don't involve coding. This positions the product as a broader productivity tool for non-technical users rather than just developers.
