Study Links Artificial Sweeteners to Accelerated Brain Aging

What the Research Found

Several popular sugar substitutes may not be as harmless as once thought. A study examining adults who consumed the most artificial sweeteners found they experienced substantially faster declines in memory and thinking compared to those with lower intake.

The highest intake of artificial sweeteners was linked to cognitive aging approximately 1.6 years faster than the lowest intake, according to the research published in Science Daily.

Who Was Most Affected

The association between artificial sweetener consumption and accelerated cognitive decline was particularly pronounced in two groups:

  • Adults under 60 — showed stronger effects compared to older participants
  • Individuals with diabetes — exhibited faster rates of cognitive aging

Important Caveats

Researchers emphasized that the study demonstrates a correlation, not necessarily causation. More research is needed before concluding that artificial sweeteners are the direct cause of these cognitive effects. Other lifestyle and health factors may contribute to the observed differences.
