WMO Urges Preparations for El Niño Conditions Amid Expected Temperature Rise
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has called on governments and communities to begin preparations for El Niño conditions that are expected to bring above-average temperatures and more extreme weather events.
The WMO issued the warning on June 2, emphasizing that early preparation can help mitigate the impacts on communities, agriculture, and infrastructure. El Niño, a naturally occurring climate pattern, occurs when warm ocean temperatures develop in the central and eastern Pacific, influencing weather patterns globally.
The organization advises that readiness measures should include reviewing emergency response plans, ensuring water resource management systems are prepared, and informing vulnerable populations about potential hazards.
