Salon to cease publication after 31 years
Salon will cease publication after 31 years, ending the run of one of the first online-only news magazines. In an unsigned announcement, the publication said the business realities of independent digital journalism had changed profoundly and that its publishing model was no longer sustainable.
Salon did not provide a detailed explanation for the decision. Its closure comes as news websites face mounting pressure over changes to digital advertising and search traffic, often referred to as “Google Zero,” as well as the growing use of AI tools.
The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter in digital publishing. Salon launched in 1994 and became part of the early wave of news organizations built specifically for the web rather than adapted from print editions.
