Sodium-Ion Batteries Offer Cheaper Alternative for EVs and Grid Storage
Most rechargeable batteries today rely on lithium-ion technology, but a new generation of sodium-ion batteries could significantly reduce costs and expand battery applications.
Sodium-ion batteries work by moving sodium ions between electrodes, similar to how lithium-ion batteries function, but they use abundant salt as a key material instead of scarce lithium. This fundamental difference could make battery production much more affordable and less dependent on supply chains for rare materials.
The technology shows particular promise for two markets: electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage. For grid applications, where size and weight matter less than in cars, sodium-ion batteries offer a cost-effective way to store renewable energy from solar and wind sources.
