Samsung Partners with Mass General to Test Galaxy Watch 8 Monitoring for GLP-1 Patients
Samsung is exploring how its upcoming Galaxy Watch 8 could help patients taking GLP-1-based medications—popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy used for diabetes and weight management. The tech giant has partnered with diabetes experts at Massachusetts General Hospital to study whether the smartwatch's sensors can identify and potentially prevent the muscle loss that can be a side effect of these treatments.
GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar, leading to significant weight reduction. However, the weight lost can include muscle mass in addition to fat, which health experts have flagged as a concern. By leveraging Samsung's wearable technology in this clinical partnership, the company aims to see if smartwatches can contribute to more comprehensive health monitoring for this growing patient population.
