Mitch Protein Identified as a Switch for Fat Burning and Fat-Cell Formation

Scientists have identified a protein called Mitch as a potential switch controlling both fat metabolism and the development of new fat cells. When the protein was switched off in human cells, the cells burned more fat and were less likely to form new fat cells.

The discovery builds on experiments in mice, where loss of the protein was associated with resistance to obesity and improved muscular endurance. The results point to Mitch as a possible target for treatments aimed at reducing fat accumulation, although further research would be needed to determine whether the approach can be translated safely and effectively to humans.
