Researchers Identify Two Previously Unknown 'Ghost' Ancestors in Human DNA

A new study has identified two previously unknown genetic lineages that contributed to modern human DNA, joining the already known Neanderthal and Denisovan contributions to our ancestry.

Researchers analyzing ancient and modern human genomes discovered traces of two "ghost" populations—so called because no fossil evidence has been found for these groups, yet their genetic signature persists in living people. These findings add complexity to the picture of human evolution, which appears to have involved repeated mixing between different human groups rather than a simple linear progression.

The analysis suggests that our ancestors encountered and interbred with multiple archaic human populations as they migrated across Eurasia. While Neanderthals and Denisovans have been previously documented through fossil records and genetic analysis, these two additional lineages represent populations that have so far left no physical trace in the archaeological record beyond their genetic legacy.

The study underscores how genetic technology is revealing layers of human history invisible to traditional paleoanthropology, where interbreeding events can be detected even when no bones or tools from those populations have been discovered.
