Scientists Crack Ancient Vesuvius Scrolls Using Advanced Imaging Techniques
Scientists have made a major breakthrough in reading ancient scrolls that were destroyed during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The scrolls, which were carbonized by the intense heat of the eruption, have long been unreadable due to their fragile state.
Researchers employed advanced X-ray phase-contrast tomography to scan the damaged scrolls. This non-invasive technique allows scientists to distinguish between ink and the charred papyrus material without physically unrolling or damaging the artifacts. The method works by detecting subtle density differences between the writing substance and the burned scroll surface.
The scrolls were recovered from the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, which was buried under volcanic material alongside Pompeii. These documents represent some of the oldest surviving classical literature, potentially containing works by ancient Greek and Roman authors that have been lost to history.
The breakthrough opens new possibilities for reading thousands of remaining scrolls that have never been successfully opened. Scientists estimate that only a fraction of the Herculaneum papyri collection has been examined, with many documents still tightly rolled and too fragile to unroll using traditional methods.
