Converting Hard-to-Recycle PVC Plastic into Engine Lubricants

Researchers have discovered a technique to convert PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic into a key ingredient used in high-performance lubricants, including engine oils. PVC is notoriously difficult to recycle, with large quantities ending up in landfills or incinerators. The new process transforms this problematic plastic waste into a valuable chemical feedstock that can be used in lubricant production.

This innovation addresses two environmental challenges simultaneously: reducing the accumulation of hard-to-recycle plastics and making the manufacturing of essential industrial lubricants more sustainable. Engine oils and similar high-performance lubricants are critical for machinery and transportation, yet their production traditionally relies on virgin petroleum-based ingredients.

By giving PVC waste a second life as a lubricant component, the technique could help close the loop in plastic recycling while reducing the environmental footprint of the lubricants industry. The research represents a potential step forward in developing circular economy approaches for materials that have historically been difficult to reclaim.
