Newspapers Sue OpenAI and Microsoft Over AI Training Data
Two prominent newspapers, The Seattle Times and Newsday, have initiated legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft. The core of their complaint centers on the allegation that the tech giants used copyrighted journalistic material from these publications without permission to train their large language models (LLMs).
The lawsuits contend that the AI systems developed by OpenAI and subsequently integrated by Microsoft are capable of reproducing content that closely mirrors the original newspaper articles. This alleged reproduction is seen as a direct infringement of copyright laws.
This legal challenge adds to a growing number of similar cases filed by media organizations and authors against AI companies, highlighting the ongoing debate and legal scrutiny surrounding the use of vast datasets for AI training and the potential implications for intellectual property rights.
