The letter, sent by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM), raised concerns about potential bribery or impropriety surrounding the transaction. The lawmakers pointed to the proximity between the library donation and the subsequent announcement of the federal land lease as warranting further scrutiny.
SoftBank revealed the donation timing in its response to the lawmakers' inquiry. The company has not publicly commented beyond the disclosure. The Ohio data center project is being developed on land leased from the U.S. Department of Energy and represents a significant infrastructure investment in the region.
Federal ethics regulations require disclosure of certain political contributions and restrict transactions between the government and entities with pending business before agencies.
