Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Disc Production by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant shift in its gaming strategy: starting January 2028, the company will entirely stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases. From that point forward, all new game releases will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers.
This transition reflects a broader industry trend toward digital consumption. In its announcement, Sony stated that "the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs" and described this move as "a natural direction" aligned with how most gamers now prefer to access and purchase their games.
The announcement comes as little surprise given recent hardware decisions. Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro notably does not include a disc drive at all—a clear signal of the company's digital-first direction.
For consumers who have already purchased physical copies or prefer disc-based ownership, there is some reprieve: games released before January 2028 will continue to be available on physical discs. However, this marks a definitive end to the era of day-one physical releases for PlayStation consoles.
