South Korean Tech Giants Commit Over $550B to Address Memory Chip Shortage

The world's two largest memory chip manufacturers—Samsung and SK Hynix—have announced plans to invest more than $550 billion in new memory lab fabs, according to TechCrunch. The initiative aims to address the ongoing memory shortage dubbed "RAMageddon," which has been intensified by surging demand for AI applications.

South Korea is positioning itself as a leading AI technology nation, and this substantial investment reflects the critical role memory chips play in powering artificial intelligence systems. High-bandwidth memory (HBM), in particular, has become essential for AI training and inference workloads, driving increased competition among chipmakers.

The commitment represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in the semiconductor industry and underscores the strategic importance of memory chip production to South Korea's economic and technological ambitions.
