SpaceX Signals Ambition to Build Terrestrial Mobile Network
During the company's first earnings call, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell revealed the company's intention to build out terrestrial mobile infrastructure. Shotwell stated that the spectrum purchased from EchoStar includes terrestrial components, which the company plans to fully utilize.
The move positions SpaceX to potentially compete directly with major US carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. According to Shotwell, the terrestrial buildout will include both capacity from satellite infrastructure and the necessary ground-based hardware and systems to deliver mobile services.
This development represents a significant expansion of SpaceX's telecommunications ambitions beyond its existing Starlink satellite internet service, which currently provides broadband connectivity primarily to rural and underserved areas through satellite connections.
