SpaceX Proposes Massive Starlink Expansion with 100,000 Additional Satellites
SpaceX is seeking to dramatically expand its Starlink satellite internet constellation with a proposal to launch an additional 100,000 satellites beyond the already approved 12,000.
The company has submitted updated filings outlining plans for this massive constellation expansion, which according to initial proposals could deliver 100 times the current bandwidth capacity. Such an increase would substantially enhance internet speeds and reliability for customers in rural and underserved areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited.
However, the proposal has faced pushback from the astronomy community and space sustainability advocates. Scientists have expressed concerns about the impact of large satellite constellations on ground-based astronomical observations, as the reflective objects can create streaks across telescope images. Additionally, orbital safety experts warn that increasing the number of satellites in low Earth orbit raises collision risks and contributes to space debris concerns.
SpaceX has been actively working to address some of these issues, including testing satellites with visors to reduce reflectivity, but the scale of the proposed expansion has renewed broader questions about the governance and regulation of commercial space activities.
The expansion plans would require regulatory approval and further environmental review before proceeding.
