XRISM Observations Reveal Supermassive Black Hole Winds Are Far More Powerful Than Expected

Astronomers using the XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) space telescope have fundamentally revised our understanding of how supermassive black holes shape their cosmic surroundings. The observations reveal that the winds produced by these black holes carry roughly 100 times more energy than scientists previously estimated.

The newly measured turbulence extends approximately 300,000 light-years from the black hole, reaching far beyond the boundaries of its host galaxy. To put this energy output in perspective, the force of these winds rivals that of several billion supernova explosions combined.

This finding demonstrates just how significantly supermassive black holes can influence the large-scale structure of the universe around them. Rather than being isolated phenomena contained within their host galaxies, these black hole-driven outflows appear capable of affecting regions of space far beyond what astronomers had previously recognized.
