Tesla Driver Claims Asleep While Using FSD in Highway Patrol Crash
The California Highway Patrol is warning drivers about the limitations of advanced driver-assist systems after a serious collision on a California highway. According to CHP, the Tesla driver stated he was asleep at the wheel while using Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode when his vehicle crashed into patrol cars positioned at an earlier accident scene.
Video footage released by CHP shows the Tesla speeding past emergency flares, traffic cones, and flashing lights before colliding with the rear of a parked patrol vehicle. Two Solano County CHP officers sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities emphasize that despite its marketing name, Tesla's Full Self-Driving feature is a driver-assist system that requires constant human supervision. "Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles," CHP stated. The incident adds to ongoing debates about how advanced driver-assistance features are named and marketed, and whether current naming conventions accurately convey the level of human oversight required.
