Tesla Recalls 3 Million Vehicles in China Over Flush Door Handle Concerns
China's market regulator has ordered a large-scale recall affecting approximately 3 million Tesla vehicles alongside vehicles from eight other automakers. The recall centers on flush door handles—Tesla's signature design element—which can be challenging for occupants to locate quickly in emergency situations.
The affected vehicles will receive multiple fixes. Most corrections can be deployed through over-the-air software updates, allowing Tesla to address certain electronic and sensor-related issues remotely. However, the recall also mandates physical warning labels that clearly identify the location of manual door release mechanisms inside the vehicles. Additional camera-related updates will also be part of the solution.
The China-wide initiative targets vehicles with concealed door handles across multiple manufacturers, highlighting a broader industry concern about emergency egress when standard door mechanisms may not function as expected. The recall underscores ongoing regulatory scrutiny in China regarding vehicle safety features and design choices that prioritize aesthetics over practical accessibility.
