Nevada Greenlights Paid Robotaxi Operations for Uber, Tesla, and Waymo
Nevada has opened its roads to commercial autonomous vehicle operations. State transportation authorities granted permits enabling Uber, Tesla, and Waymo to charge passengers for robotaxi rides—a milestone that signals growing regulatory acceptance of self-driving technology at scale.
The combined permits allow the three companies to deploy up to 8,000 robotaxis over the coming 12 months. This represents one of the largest coordinated expansions of commercial autonomous ride-hailing in the United States to date.
Each company brings a different approach to the market. Waymo has operated autonomous vehicles in select cities and is expanding its proven model. Tesla has yet to launch a dedicated robotaxi service but has received approval to begin doing so. Uber, which previously wound down its in-house autonomous vehicle program, is re-entering the space through partnerships.
The approvals reflect a broader trend of states creating clearer pathways for autonomous vehicle commercialization, though the industry continues to navigate technical challenges, public trust, and regulatory scrutiny in other regions.
