SpaceX's Ship 40 Completes Historic Return as First Surviving Starship Upper Stage

SpaceX has achieved a notable milestone in its Starship development program with the return of Ship 40 to Starbase. The upper stage completed its journey back to the launch site after surviving both its descent through Earth's atmosphere and a splashdown, followed by an extended recovery operation at sea.

This recovery represents a significant step for SpaceX's ambitions toward full Starship reusability. Unlike previous test flights where Starship upper stages were lost during reentry or splashdown, Ship 40 returned intact enough for engineers to conduct thorough inspections and analysis.

The returned hardware will now undergo detailed examination at SpaceX's Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Engineers will study the vehicle's thermal protection systems, structural integrity after the harsh reentry conditions, and overall flight performance. These findings are expected to inform improvements to future Starship designs as SpaceX continues its iterative development approach.

The achievement comes as SpaceX works toward making Starship a fully reusable spacecraft capable of carrying both crew and cargo to destinations ranging from Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars.
