Flesh-Eating Parasite Reemerges in U.S. as Researchers Deploy Predictive Tracking System

The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, has reemerged in the United States after being declared eradicated in the 1960s. The parasite poses a serious threat to livestock, wildlife, pets, and potentially humans as it spreads northward from its recent detection points.

The screwworm was originally eliminated from the U.S. through a sustained Sterile Insect Technique program, which involved releasing massive numbers of sterilized male flies to disrupt breeding cycles. Officials are now working to revive and adapt this eradication strategy to address the current outbreak.

Simultaneously, researchers at UC San Diego are developing a new tracking system designed to predict where the parasite is most likely to strike next. The system leverages environmental and geographic data to model potential spread patterns, aiming to help authorities allocate resources more effectively and target intervention efforts before infestations take hold.

The reemergence highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining agricultural and public health defenses against invasive parasites, and the dual approach—combining proven eradication methods with modern predictive tools—represents a critical front in controlling the outbreak before it establishes a broader foothold.
