CFTC Opened Three Previously Undisclosed Investigations into Polymarket Trading Activity

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched at least three previously undisclosed investigations into trading activity on Polymarket, the decentralized prediction market platform. Documents obtained by WIRED show the investigations focused on suspicious trading patterns around specific events, including potential insider trading related to Google.

The first investigation examined trading activity connected to former President Joe Biden's pardon decisions. The second involved trading related to the Iran conflict. The third and reportedly most extensive investigation centered on trades placed through Google accounts that appeared to exploit advance knowledge of market-moving events, raising concerns about potential insider trading.

The CFTC oversees prediction markets as part of its mandate to regulate derivatives and detect market manipulation. These investigations suggest regulators are paying closer attention to the growing volume and influence of prediction markets, particularly regarding events that could be affected by non-public information.

The documents provide insight into how federal regulators are adapting their oversight frameworks to address novel questions about information integrity and market fairness in blockchain-based prediction platforms.
