Deep-Sea Drones Poised to Map 98% of World's Oceans by 2028

A new class of ocean-sensing drones is being engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of the deep ocean, potentially enabling coverage of up to 98 percent of the world's oceans by 2028. These autonomous underwater vehicles are designed to endure crushing pressures at the deepest points of the ocean, addressing one of the key challenges in marine exploration and data collection.

Unlike surface buoys or shallow-water monitoring systems, these deep-dive drones would access regions that have historically remained largely unmapped and unmonitored. By reaching abyssal depths, they could gather data on ocean chemistry, temperature, currents, and marine life across vast stretches of previously inaccessible territory.

The initiative represents a significant step forward for ocean science, offering researchers continuous, large-scale data collection capabilities that could improve climate modeling, marine biology research, and environmental monitoring efforts.
