Court Documents Reveal Internal Warnings at TikTok Over Child Safety Failures

Court documents obtained by NPR reveal that TikTok employees repeatedly warned company leadership about safety risks facing children on the platform, but executives reportedly failed to take appropriate action.

The previously unreported depositions of TikTok staffers were filed in federal court in March, connected to a multi-district litigation initiated in 2022. That litigation brings together hundreds of lawsuits alleging that TikTok, along with Meta and Snap, failed to protect minor users from harm.

According to the court records, employees raised specific concerns including minors bypassing age-restricted content and minors appearing in what court documents describe as "transactional sexual content"—material from which the company could financially benefit. Staff members expressed frustration over how executives responded to these warnings.

The company is now facing hundreds of lawsuits over its record on child safety, as plaintiffs allege TikTok knew about risks posed to young users but did not implement adequate safeguards.
